Obituary for Joyce Frederiksen

Joyce Frederiksen, 102, passed away on April 3, 2026, at Eden Acres in Perry, IA. She was born on July 6, 1923, in Kensett, IA, the daughter of Dewey and Mae (Hinote) Houston.

Joyce rarely talked about herself as child/young adult but loved sharing stories of going to beauty school in downtown Des Moines, dancing with the servicemen at Babe’s during the war, antics with friends throughout the years and her love of dancing. In 1965, she met her husband, Lewis, at the Val Air Ballroom. Seems he was very popular as a good dancer!

She and Lewis W. Frederiksen were married on October 29, 1965 and moved to Kensett after his retirement to build a house which they were very proud of. Joyce enjoyed collecting special things for her China cabinet, gambling on penny and nickel slots, playing cards, watching Lawrence Welk and an occasional afternoon beer.

Survivors include her stepson Dennis (Joy) Frederiksen, Des Moines; granddaughters Debbie Frederiksen, Kansas City, MO and Pam Dewey, Des Moines; grandsons Ed (Dawn) Frederiksen, Norwalk and Brian (Colleen) Frederiksen, Des Moines; step-grandson Hal (Jennifer) Tetrick, Hendersonville, TN; step-granddaughter Hilary (Chad) Tetrick-Pierce, Des Moines and several great grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, and several other family members.

The family asks that you make a donation in memory of Joyce to your favorite charity as there is no celebration of life service planned at this time.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and inurnment will be at Kensett, IA. Iowa Cremation, Waukee, is assisting.
