Donagene Hawk

Donagene Hawk, 96, of Maquoketa, IA, formerly of Clinton, IA passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, February 8, 2024.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donagene was born in Albia, IA, and attended Albia-Ottumwa Heights Academy. She married Dwayne Jones in San Francisco, CA in 1945 and together they had three children, Philip, William, and Jill.  She later married Ralph “Doc” Hawk in Elvira, IA, and developed a strong bond with his children and grandchildren.

Donagene loved her family dearly and will be fondly remembered for the kind-hearted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend she was. She enjoyed traveling and helping others; she spent two years living in South Korea where she volunteered her time helping orphans in need. Donagene was an active member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church and later Zion Lutheran Church in Clinton, IA, where she developed many lasting friendships. Donagene loved to entertain, hosting many dinners and gatherings of family, extended family, and friends over the years. She worked at her parents' restaurant, Grayce’s Palmer House, for many years. She was also employed at Chemplex and Don’s Jewelry in Clinton.  Donagene was recognized as the first volunteer for Samaritan Hospice in Clinton and was awarded the Volunteer of the Year of Samaritan Hospice in 1995.

Donagene was preceded in death by her husband, her mother and step-father, Grayce and Palmer Johnson; son, Philip Jones; and grandson, Billy Jones. 

She is survived by her children, William (Dorothy) Jones of Clinton and Jill Jones; daughter-in-law, Pat Warren of CA; two granddaughters, Donagene Jones (William Halsey) of Clovis, CA and Jill Everett (Andy Burmeister) of Lost Nation; and a great-grandson, Dean Blinkinsop (Mason Sims) of Davenport. She is also survived by her step-children, Rachel Monroe of Sebastopol, CA; Rebecca Lynch of Petaluma, CA; and Dennis Hawk of San Francisco, CA; step-grandchildren Nathaniel (Katie) Monroe and his children Raya Brielle and Levi Hawk Monroe of Windsor, CA; Jonathan Monroe of Santa Rosa, CA;and Laurel Lynch of New Haven, CT.
