Jerry William Block
Jerry William Block, 86, of Coralville, IA, formerly of Bettendorf, passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2023. A private family gathering, and Celebration of Life will occur later this summer.
Jerry was born on January 8, 1937, in Davenport, IA, the son of William F. and Anna M. (Hass) Block. He attended Davenport High School and went on to graduate from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. While at Morningside College, Jerry was a three-sport athlete taking the court in basketball and the fields of both football and baseball. Playing short stop on the baseball team was his favorite and as a 6’6” man, could be rather intimidating to their opponents, which he loved.
In 1957, Jerry married Phyllis (Border) Thompson. Over the next 20+ years they raised their six children together until they later divorced. In 1982, Jerry met his new love, Judy Bloome of Bettendorf, and the two have been by each other’s side ever since. Jerry worked as a District Sales Manager for GMAC Financing Corporation from the time he graduated college to his retirement.
Jerry had great passion for many hobbies that occupied his free time. He was an avid sportsman and loved spending time outdoors golfing, hunting and fishing. Stories of time spent with friends and family in the woods and duck blinds, or endless hours spent on just about any lake with a fishing pole in hand never got old. On the golf course he had a “short-game” friends envied and was able to hit that rare hole-in-one six times.
Jerry’s love for his children and grandchildren was unconditional. He never hesitated, and most often insisted, in helping during both good and bad times. He was devoted to spending time whenever schedules allowed and looked forward to each family celebration and holiday. His greatest joy in the past several years was spending time with his grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his five children, Debra Block, Des Moines, IA, Susan (Scott) Freeman, Coralville, IA, Daniel Block, Davenport, IA, Steven (Gretchen) Block of Camanche, IA, and Sheri Foster of East Moline, IL. Three grandchildren and six great grandchildren, Taylor (Colten) Hines and their children Camden, Kinzley and Kaden, Clayton (Kayla) Freeman and their children Myles, Liam and Scarlett, and Hunter Block. His love, Judy Bloome of Bettendorf, IA, and one sister, Dottie Emfinger of San Angelo, TX

Along with his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Bonnie Sue Block, brothers Tom and Don Block, sisters Ruth Brown and Nancy Hitchcock.
The family would like to express our gratitude for the love and support shown not only Jerry over the years, but for each of us during the recent weeks.
