Frank Rogers Hendrickson

Frank Rogers Hendrickson, 93, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, August 10th, in Marion, Iowa.
Frank was born on August 3rd, 1926 in Springfield, Pennsylvania. In 1950 he graduated from Jefferson Medical College. Frank served two years as a General Medical Officer in the Navy before completing a radiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Frank married the love of his life, Joan, on December 10th, 1955.

After a year in Europe, Frank and Joan relocated to Oak Park, Illinois to raise a family. Frank spent his career as a physician in Chicago at Presbyterian Hospital (currently Rush University Medical Center). In addition to treating patients, Frank served as a professor and chairman of radiation oncology department at Rush.  He authored numerous technical papers and was part of multiple research projects and clinical trials, including the Fermi Neutron Project at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory where he served as medical director.  In addition to many professional accolades, Frank is best known for successfully treating a Brookfield Zoo snow leopard suffering from jaw cancer, appearing in photographs with his hands in the snow leopards’ mouth.

Frank retired in 1996 after a successful and fulfilling career. Upon retirement, Frank was presented with the Chicago Radiological Society Distinguished Service Award which is bestowed annually on a member who has brought honor to the Chicago radiological community through outstanding service in teaching, research, organizational work, or practice.  Frank was also honored to have an endowed chair in his name at Rush University Medical Center.

Frank enjoyed golf, gardening, curling, and competitive bridge. While living in Illinois, he and Joan were members of Oak Park Country Club; it was there they built many fond memories and long-lasting friendships. Frank was known for his sense of humor and golf quips while on the course.

For over twenty years Frank and Joan called Florida their home, living at Sugar Mill in New Smyrna Beach after Frank’s retirement. It was there the couple began to create new memories and friendships with members of Sugar Mill Country Club. They enjoyed visits from their children and grandchildren during the summers and holidays. It was also in Florida where Frank said goodbye to his wife of nearly 63 years, upon her passing in September 2018. Frank lived the remainder of his life in Marion, Iowa, with family nearby.

Frank was revered for his integrity, dedication, humor, and generosity. He will be greatly missed by his four children: David (Marla), Cheryl (John), Bruce (Sharon), and Brian (Peggy), his ten grandchildren and five great-grandsons. In the days leading to his passing, Frank correctly predicted the gender of his sixth great-grandson, due later this year.
