William Durell Sailor, 85, of Albia, died of heart failure Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at his home.

Bill was born on September 4, 1932 in Conneaut, Ohio, to Carroll LeClaire Sailor and Anita Louise Verner. On June 22, 1957, he married Beverly Jean Gouchee in Lisbon, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 9, 1996.

He was a 1950 graduate of Lisbon High School. After high school, Bill played semi-pro baseball and worked in Cedar Rapids. He was drafted in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army signal corps at Camp Gordon (Georgia) and Fort Bragg (North Carolina) during the Korean War. He attended Buena Vista College and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). He was a teacher and coach at West Central of Maynard, Lovilia and Albia for nearly 40 years. He started the high school baseball program at Albia in 1962 and coached for 20 years. He also coached football, basketball and track. In addition, was an official for high school football and basketball.

Bill had a life-long love of sports, and was an avid golfer and fisherman. 

He is survived by a son, Scott of Des Moines; daughters Megan (Greg) Pugh of Waukee and Heidi Peterson of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Kelsi Pugh of Kansas City, Missouri; Taylor Pugh of Waukee; and Chase Peterson, of Dallas; and a brother, Phil of Lisbon. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carroll; a daughter, Lisa Jo, in 1961; and a son, Marc, in 2017.

A memorial service will be held at Sinnott Funeral Home, Highway 5 South, Albia at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. A memorial fund has been established to the Leisure Lounge Senior Center in Albia.
