Donald Stonebraker
Donald L. Stonebraker, 85 of Cedar Rapids died Monday March 26, 2018 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Per Don’s request there will be no services.
Survivors include his wife Wanelle; a son Kelly (Deborah) of Chicago, Illinois; two daughters Donell (Dave) Lloyd of Cedar Rapids and Geri (Troy) Albrecht of Marion; and a sister Carol Ann (Marion) Cowling of West Des Moines. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Erica, Shelby, Phoebe, Hannah, Jonah, Hollis and a great grandson Camden. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Don was born on December 22, 1932 in Corydon the son of Lee and Bernice Rockhold Stonebraker. He graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College and received his Master’s degree in education from the University of Iowa.
Don was an elementary principal at several schools in the Cedar Rapids School District, retiring after more than thirty years of service.
Don was a member of the Optimist Club, the N.E.A., several bridge clubs, as well as having proudly served in the Army. Wanelle and Don opened their home and hearts as foster parents to many children for over twenty years.
He enjoyed, travel, playing bridge, his many dogs, especially Val, going to the theater and loved the time spent with his many friends, colleagues, and beloved family. Don will forever be remembered as an example to his students and family as a man of integrity and honor.
A memorial fund has been established.
