Richard R. Carpenter

Richard R. Carpenter, 87, of Grundy Center passed away on Monday, September 5, 2016 at Northcrest Specialty Care in Waterloo.  A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

Richard Rueben Carpenter was born on December 2, 1928 to Lloyd and Marcella Bartlett Carpenter.  He graduated from Janesville High School in 1947.  Dick enlisted in the US Navy for 3 years and then the US Air Force for 3 years.  Proudly serving during the Korean Conflict.

Upon his return from the service, he worked for Capital Tobacco.  His work there had him traveling to all the local drug stores.  He met his wife, Shirley Slifer, at the corner drug store in Grundy Center.  They were united in marriage on May 27, 1951 at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, IA.  Dick retired from Meyer’s Cox Company in Dubuque.

Dick enjoyed being a traveling salesman, because of all the wonderful people he met along the way.  His favorite hobby was trout fishing with his best friend Glenn Sears and other family members. He also loved spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Alan Smothers, Dawn Kalkbrenner, Bridget Carpenter, Jeremy Carpenter, Justin (Melody) Carpenter, and Danelle (Leroy) Kapping and 10 great grandchildren.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; children, Janelle, David, Jay Paul, and Connie; father, Lloyd Carpenter; mother, Marcella Bumgardner; and siblings, Loren Lloyd Carpenter, Jr.; Ipha Gene Cox; Clarence Carpenter; and Robert D. Carpenter.

Memorial donations may be directed to the family at Bridget Carpenter, 3831 Lennox Avenue Northeast, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.
