John "Bud" Currie
John (Bud) Aldrich Currie, 80, of Columbus Junction, passed away on Thursday, April 28 2016, at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction, IA, following an extended illness. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 11 AM at United Presbyterian Church in Columbus Junction. There will be food and fellowship celebrating his life at the American Legion in Columbus Junction after the service.
John (Bud) Aldrich Currie was born in Los Angeles, CA, on August 14, 1935, to Max and Dorothy (Aldrich) Currie. At the age of 10 they moved back to Essex, Iowa. He graduated in 1954 from Essex High School and entered the Army in August 1954-1956. He was stationed in Japan as a radar operator. He was united in marriage on August 18, 1956, to Beverly Royer.
He attended Clarinda Jr College for 2 years and graduated from Tarkio College in 1960. He received his Master’s degree at The University of Iowa in 1964 and his Ed.S. Degree from the University of Iowa in 1974. He spent all his career in education at Columbus Community. He taught business courses for 6 years, was high school principal for 10 years, and superintendent for 20 years. He retired in 1996.
John enjoyed having a cabin at Lake Odessa for many years and wintering in Mission Texas. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church having served as an Elder; the American Legion, and VFW. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed fixing up older cars and going to car shows, and Columbus Day parades. He dearly loved golfing and spending time with his grand-kids and great-grand-kids.
John is survived by his wife, four children Vicki (Dale) Griffith, Haslett, MI; Robert (Venita) Currie, Ames, IA; Darla (Lennie) Finke, Columbus Jct, IA; and Cindy (Rick) Sebring, Fort Gratiot, MI. Eleven grandchildren, Jeff (Kim), Max (Hannah), and Gabe Griffith; Courtney (Jeff) Hartwig, Nolan Currie; Traci (Jason) Mueller, Mitchel (Lindy) Finke, Chase Finke; Hanna (Steve) Sawher, Camden, Casey Sebring. Six great grandchildren and one on the way; Isis and Ella Griffith, Hayden and Madilynn Hartwig, Keira Mueller, and Gannon Finke. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Gene (Judy) Currie, George (Sandy) Currie, and Kenneth (Dawn) Currie and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Judy (Robert) Lungren.
