Elsie Nina Lanz Inglethron
Elsie Nina Lanz Inglethron, 98 ½, of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, November 5, 2015 at her home with daughter Jaynann by her side.
Elsie was born May 18, 1917 in her rural Ottumwa, Iowa home. She was the only child of Frederick and Gertrude Weenike Lanz. She graduated from her Farson, Iowa high school in 1935, one of six in her class. She married Willis Earl Inglethron in 1950 who preceded her in death in 2007. Surviving them are their two daughters, Helene Inglethron of Nebraska and Jaynann Inglethron of Cedar Rapids.
During her life Elsie worked a variety of jobs. She provided child care for a young relative in Zuni, NM on the Indian reservation, worked as a maid for the elite in Ottumwa, IA, made eye glasses for American Optical during WWII. She has lived in Cedar Rapids since 1956 and for many years provided housekeeping services for many local commercial businesses.
Elsie was fun-loving with an adventurous spirit. She was a strong woman, fiercely independent and definitely had a mind of her own. She loved to draw and write for her school paper. She loved animals of all sorts including her horse Star and her beloved dogs. She loved car racing, travel, the theater, music, eating out, and the company of friends and family. Most of all she loved her daughters and was an amazing mother. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. At 97 she went on the ride of her life on a B17 Bomber over Cedar Rapids. During quieter times she loved watching the birds and all critters in her own backyard or working on her word search puzzles. Elsie was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Lutheran Church, 1000 3rd Ave SE, Cedar Rapids on Friday, Nov 13 from 3-6 pm.
A graveside service will be held at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Ottumwa at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
Elsie's laugh and smile, warmth and generosity, will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was a special mother and a great friend. Her loss is truly painful; but may we be comforted in faith that now a special angel is watching over us.
