Edward P. Junkins

Edward P. Junkins, 79, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 31, 2014, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loved ones.  Ed will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary Lukas of Iowa City, IA; his five children: Jacqueline M. Junkins-Hopkins of Bryn Mawr, PA, Victoria Baumgart of Fort Collins, CO, Julie of San Ramon, CA, Edward P. Junkins, Jr. of Corvallis, OR and Gigi Metzger of Orlando, FL; 17 grandchildren; his sister, Nisco Junkins of Eugene, OR; his aunt, Sister Mary Alice Chineworth, OSP of Baltimore, MD; step children: Nikki Morgan and Natonya Walker both of Iowa City, John Pantazis of Dietrich, IL, Katherine Schroeder of Brooklyn, NY; and 6 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Magdalen and Paul Junkins, former wives Julia and Mary Kay and several aunts and uncles.

Ed was born on June 17, 1935 in Des Moines, IA.  He graduated from Bloomfield High School in in 1953 and from the University of Iowa in 1977. He served in the US Army and National Guard.  He worked for the University of Iowa Purchasing Department, was an Administrative Assistant for the University of Iowa Department of Pathology, and was a Director for Golden Neolife Diamite for several years.  Ed enjoyed fishing, eating out, reading science fiction, meeting with friends and spending time with his family. He expressed his love for music as a drummer in his high school band and by enjoying good jazz. Ed had a beautiful singing voice and until recently performed with the Voices of Experience.

Ed was a loving, kind and generous man who never knew a stranger.  He had a special love for animals and is survived by his beloved dogs, Suki and Charlie, and his two cats, Princess and Patty-Cake.  He loved his family unconditionally.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  

Mary and family would like to thank the staff at Country View Senior Living who provided care and support for Ed over the past year, and the Iowa City Hospice staff who supported Ed and Mary through his struggle with end stage heart failure over the past 19 months. A special thank you to the staff of the UI Heart and Vascular Center.  A Jazz Picnic was held in celebration of Ed's life on April 6, 2013.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Iowa City, Inc.
