James E. Herbert
I visited with Jim over the past few months. He had a warmth about him that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm so sad to hear of his passing and am thinking of your family today. Thank you for allowing me to spend time with him. It was my honor to do so. - Michele
Ruth Ann & Daughters, Martha & Rebecca: Deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing, though we know that --- in a sense -- you lost the Jim best known to you some years ago. We shall always remember our times together, Jim's dray sense of humor and native brilliance. He always seemed to have one more license to obtain, one more skill to acquire, one more mountain to climb. May he be gathered in the ternal arms of our Loving Father and may you all be comforted in your loss. Love from friends in Ohio, Ruth Ann & Mack Peel
I have so many good memories of Uncle Jim. Stopping at Baskin Robbins to get ice cream on the way to spend the night with Martha; visiting in Marion with my grandson....he just picked Ethan up and carried him around the yard, pointing out all the interesting things, plucking the keys on the piano. He always had a big smile and a great big bear hug for me whenever I saw him. Aunt Ruth Ann, Martha, and Rebecca - our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love always.
Dear Ruth Ann. How sorry I am for your loss of Jim. I know that we have not seen one another for quite some time. In fact, I believe that the last time I saw Jim was when he called at our home in Marion to discuss the placing of electrical generators across 11th Street from our property. I feel that that was probably a good 20 years ago. I have been on intermittant "assignment" in Amana since about 1996 taking care of two grandchildren - the youngest being two at the time. That "intermittant assignment" became more permanent when the grandchildren's father died in 1999. That two year old has now graduated from high school and is in his second semester at college. I am still in Amana but should be able to return home with in the next 3 or 4 years after he is firmly settled. I tell you this because I am not sure if you are still living in the same beautiful home in Marion...my absence from Marion leaves a great void in my knowledge of who has moved or who hasn't. Again. I am so sorry for your loss of Jim. I know that you two were totally devoted to each other. Your mutual committment always made me smile. My best....Just Mary Ames on 2/12/2012 at 12:15 P.M.
Although I didn't know Jim well, I felt I did know him because my parents, Roger & Eileen, were friends of his. Jim was also at Crestview Acres during the time my mother was there, who also suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. I would occasionally see Ruth Ann there. You always knew it was Friday afternoon because Jim and Roger were out having a couple beers together trying to solve the world's problems. I also know that Ruth Ann attended Ottumwa High School where my father went, I believe at the same time. My condolences to Ruth Ann and the rest of their family. May he rest in peace...
Dear Ruth Ann and family- I was sorry to read of Jim's death. He was quite a character. My sympathies to all of you, Sincerely, Bill Stone
Jim and I were very good friends while attending North High School in Omaha, Nebraska. The Korean War stsrted and I joined the Navy and Jim the Army causing us to lose contact with each other. I did get to visit with Jim once in Michigan City and then once again in Marion, Iowa where I met his wife Ruth Ann. My only regret is that we were not closer together as good friends are hard to find.
I worked with Jim when we employed at Cassabaum's . He was such a wonderful person and always kind and courteous to all his fellow employees. I am sure he will be greatly missed. mary Price
