Obituary for James E. Herbert

James E. Herbert, 82, of Marion passed away peacefully Friday February 10, 2012 at Crestview Acres in Marion. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday March 10, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church 310 5th St. SE Cedar Rapids. Survivors include his wife Ruth Ann, daughters Rebecca (Michael) Fanning of St. Petersburg, FL and Martha (Jerry Wasilk) Herbert of Ramsey, MN., a sister Ruth Anne (David) Swain of Panama City, FL and sisters-in-law Frances Haller and Susan Keller. Also surviving are five grandsons; Jonathan, Timothy, Nicholas, and Christopher Fanning and Thomas Wasilk and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law Robert Haller and Terry Keller. James was born January 2, 1930 to Edwin and Minnie (nee Slay) Herbert in Memphis, TN. He graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in Electrical Engineering which profession he followed for the rest of his life. He was a veteran of the Korean war serving with the Army. He married Ruth Ann Haller in Ottumwa, IA on March 17, 1956. Jim was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Rapids. He was deeply interested in flying and held his private pilot''s license for over 40 years. Jim''s gentle spirit and wry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff at Crestview Acres and the staff of Care Initiatives Hospice for the love they showed Jim.
