Darrel Barton Hoff
Ed and I extend our deepest sympathy to Ardith and family. We both appreciated and enjoyed knowing Darrel during his days at Luther. We wish for Ardith and all the healing and peace that the care and love of family and friends can bring.
To the family of Dr. Hoff, I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Hoff. He was such a wonderful astronomy professor. Several years ago he taught an evening class at Iowa Western Community College. His students were all Council Bluffs science teachers. We all loved his class, his teaching style, and enthusiasm. One evening we all gathered at my house for a cookout and to my surprise Dr. Hoff joined us. Normally, I wouldn't even remember someone who taught me one class that many years ago. Dr. Hoff was indeed a special person.
Darell will be sorely missed by myself and our entire profession. He was a great contributor to our profession as well as an excellent role-model for character, determination, and empathy. He will be missed by many of us veterans and, more importantly, by those who never got the chance to meet, and work with, Dr. Hoff. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, also, for their loss. Dr. Jack Gerlovich Professor Science Safety/Education, Drake University
I am very sad to hear of the passing of Darrel. We worked closely together in the 90's in the chemistry lab at Luther, and his contributions were significant and well appreciated by all of us in chemistry. I consider Darrel a friend, and I miss him. Peace.
I remember Dr. Hoff as an inspiring teacher. I took astronomy from Dr. Hoff at UNI and went on to become a science teacher myself. I now teach astronomy and I remember fondly the experience I had in Dr. Hoff's class and I hope I can inspire my students in the same way he inspired me. He will be missed.
Dear Friends and Family of Dr. Hoff, Forty-five years ago I was a first semester freshman at UNI and a student in Dr. Hoff's The Physical Sciences I. I learned many things from Dr. Hoff during the semester including that I could do this, not only Dr. Hoff's course but college as well, and what astronomy and the physical sciences were about. Dr. Hoff said that astronomy is "the study of the heavens", and I've shared Dr. Hoff's definition with almost every class I've taught through the years. Dr. Hoff was a fine teacher and person and he will be missed. I wish you the best. Dr. Jeff Llewellyn Brevard College

I am sorry to hear of Darrel's passing, and wish to express my sympathy to his family. I grew up in Viroqua, WI, too, and Darrel and I often reminisced about our home town during the years we both served on the science faculty at Luther.
Darrel was my chem & physics teacher at Westby High 1961-62 - during which he was called up for Nat'l Guard service. When he came back, he volunteered an armored troop carrier for our Homecoming Parade! That was a parade that I'll never forget, because I got to ride in the monster - all the way back to the armory in Viroqua (with a police escort!) Thanks Darrel, for all that has been, and for all that will be, and to God I say - thanks for sharing him with us. Many blessings on you and yours this day. Rev. Keith E. Homstad, WHS Class of 1962

It is very sad to hear of the passing of a fellow teacher....particularly one who was in the Ed Department here at Luther and helped so many of our students. It will also be sad to not have him to speak up in the UU service because he often made such interesting comments as he lit candles. He will be missed.
I want to express my condolences to Ardith and family of Darrel. We had many pleasant interactions in the Luther College Physics Department when Darrel returned to northeast Iowa. These included many conversations in the halls of Valders while Darrel was teaching courses for some years, and also at the annual Physics Picnics. Doris and I have sent a memorial in Darrel's memory to Luther College. Dennis Barnaal, retired from Luther College, but back in the classroom for fall 2009

John was technology director for many years at South Winneshiek. He knew Darrel well and always liked him and respected him and his knowledge. He felt that Darrel had a handle on humanity and a dedication to making the world a better place. You have our sincere sympathy. John and Kathy Kerber

Dear family, I so regret being unable to attend the service at Luther College. Darrel was so gracefully and energetically enthusiastic about educating and he provided a presence on campus i greatly admired. were jean young still alive, she would want to speak fondly and gratefully of Darrel's significant support for her and her work. when i was designing a course for education majors, Darrel was especially helpful to me in working out how best to effect schooling in the sciences. He was generous, gracious, and persistent in this work as in all other work. May you grieve well his death and celebrate well his life. He was a blessing to many of us.

Sorry to hear about your loss. May you be able to celebrate his life, he lived a full one (from the little we knew him!). Thoughts and prayers. Chris, Julie, and Kaia Nelson

Darrel is a rare and wonderful person. He was down to earth and amazingly cerebral. His rye humor at our Unitarian services will be greatly missed. My thoughts are for Ardith and Darrel's family.
