William Loren Husted

William Loren Husted, 88, of Victor, formerly of Shellsburg, died at St. Luke''s Hospital, Sunday, December 07, 2008, after a brief illness. Memorial Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Tom Felts of Parkers Grove Baptist Church. Friends may call at the chapel after 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The Cremation Society of Eastern Central Western Iowa is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his children, Bill Husted of Aberdeen, MD, Sue (Dave) Hoeck of Cedar Rapids, and Deb (Brien) Michalek of Victor; four grandchildren, Josh Hoeck, Carlin Michalek, Scott Michalek, and Rob (Janet) Dudley; and two great grandchildren, Phillip and Kayla. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty and a brother and sister. Bill was born on November 6, 1920 in rural Shellsburg to Bert and Amelia Husted. He married Ruth "Betty" Pangborn in Washington DC on March 24, 1942. Bill was a WWII Army veteran, serving in Guam. He also played baseball for the Army. He obtained a Master''s Degree in Industrial Arts from Iowa State and was a starting center for basketball at Iowa State in 1939. Bill taught school at Hanlon Town, Palo, and Garrison and then taught Industrial Arts for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools for over 20 years. He then worked at General Mills for 18 years, retiring in 1993. Bill was a member of the Shellsburg American Legion, and a Trustee with the Parkers Grove Cemetery. He was interested in sports, rock collecting, and polka music. Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous @ 12007 – 190th Street, Monticello, Iowa 52310.
