Janet Eileen Suchomel

Jan Suchomel, 73, of Van Horne, died Sunday, July 8, 2007 at her home surrounded by her loving family. At her request, there will be no public visitation or services. Arrangements entrusted to the Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa, with private committal to be held at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Jan is survived by her daughter Sherrill (Dave) Herke of Estherville, Iowa; sons Tom Suchomel of Cedar Rapids, Randy (Lisa) Suchomel of Van Horne, and Kurt Suchomel of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; her cherished sister and brother-in-law Kay and John Woodhouse of Delhi; former daughters-in-law JoAnn Suchomel of Cedar Rapids and Lynn Roberts of Raymore, Missouri; cousins Lois Hinrichs of Waukon and Eleanor Anderson (Lee) of Fallbrook, CA; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Janet Eileen Herrbach Suchomel was born in Cedar Rapids on May 1, 1984 to Adolphe and Ethel (McCarty) Herrbach. She attended the original Taylor Elementary School, graduated from Roosevelt High School, and attended the University of Dubuque. She worked for over 30 years at Cryovac, retiring in 1996. Her interests included writing prose and poetry, both of which have been published in Julien’s Journal. She was also an avid reader, maintained extensive personal correspondence, and enjoyed perennial gardening, amateur photography, bird watching, crossword puzzles, family Scrabble sessions, and collected antique cream pitchers and cat and bird figurines. She encouraged everyone to plant trees and was a conservationist and supporting member of the National Resources Defense Council and National Arbor Day Foundation. Memorials may be directed to Van Horne’s branch of Trees Forever, c/o PO Box 238, Van Horne, Iowa 52346, or to your local animal shelter. The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratitude to the nurses of Hospice of Mercy for their dedicated and professional care.
