Phil always thought of Susanne when he read Emily Dickinson poems and he wanted to share this one with you Cork you are a gem, Erin and Emily our prayers and thoughts are with you. Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immortality. We slowly drove, he knew no haste, And I had put away My labor, and my leisure too, For his civility. We passed the school where children played At wrestling in a ring; We passed the fields of gazing grain, We passed the setting sun. We paused before a house that seemed A swelling of the ground; The roof was scarcely visible, The cornice but a mound. Since then ’t is centuries; but each Feels shorter than the day I first surmised the horses’ heads Were toward eternity.

Dear family, It is with a sad heart that I hear the news of Susanne's passing. I had the pleasure of working with her whenever we had deaf/hard of hearing students at Cardinal. The story I'd like to share is one that occured about 3 or 4 years ago. While we were in her office having a pretty serious discussion about one of our deaf students, I feel this big nose shove my arm up off of the chair. Bella, the therapy dog had arrived. Susanne, the serious administrator who was strong in making decisions, just became mush when Bella showed up. her voice became high pitched and sing-songy. She told Bella to sit down, and to wait. Susanne opened up her bottom drawer to her desk, took out a doggie treat and then proceeded to ask Bella, "Are you a good puppy today? Do you want a treat? Aren't you the good puppy?" and gave Bella her treats. Susanne dismissed Bella, squirted hand sanitizer into her hands to clean up, and then turned to me and said, "Isn't that just great that we had a visit from Bella today?" Needless to say, I was dumbfounded as to how she responded to Bella. That one dog made a strong administrator into a melting soft-hearted real person. It was a great experience for me to see how real Susanne was. I have missed Susanne since she had retired, and I will continue to do so. Please accept my sincere condolences. Judy Gipson

My son and I are now both widowers. Cork lost his darling Susanne Friday night, December 21. He and his daughters Emily and Erin were by her side. I had kissed her goodbye a few hours before. I have lost my dear "Sunshine" and her memory will never leave me. She bolstered me through my doctorate at Drake, but long before that she had me appear as her "father" at an ISU sorority affair; she labored on our houseboat, she helped repair flood damage at our home and at the island; she was an inspiration to me as personifying what a teacher should really be. Sunshine, you will always be "Younger Than Springtime" to an old man who was once your "Tiger." Vaya con dios, my darling.

Corliss, Emily, Erin and Family... Please accept my condolences at this most difficult time. I will always remember Susanne as a great advocate for our youngest and most vulnerable students. Especially those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. I learned a great deal from Susanne and was most fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her for many years in Maquoketa. She cared deeply and has left a legacy of caring and kindness.
