Jeanette Carlson Baty

Jeanette Carlson Baty, 85, of Cedar Falls died Sunday morning of injuries suffered in an automobile accident June 27. She had been a patient at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics since being flown there from Independence following the accident. Mrs. Baty was born August 20, 1921 in rural Pocahontas county, Iowa, the daughter of Grace Alberts Carlson and John Francis Carlson. She was educated in the rural schools of Pocahontas county, graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1938, and from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon in 1942. A highly regarded teacher of English and Literature, she taught in Norway (Iowa), Flint (Michigan), Newton (Iowa) and Osage (Iowa). On June 29, 1956 she was married to Jackson N. Baty in Pocahontas. They lived in Osage for 21 years, and then moved to Cedar Falls. Mrs. Baty was the first woman ever elected to the Osage City Council, where she served for two terms. She was news editor of the Mitchell County Press-News for a brief period before returning to her “first love”, the classroom, in Osage. She retired from teaching in 1987. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jackson; by her son, Corliss (Suzanne), of Maquoketa; her daughter, Jean Annette Young (Sean), of Westby, Wisconsin; her four grandchildren, Emily K. Baty of Centennial Colorado; Erin Jill Miller of Loveland, Colorado; Timothy N. Young and Kathleen G. Young both of Westby, Wisconsin. Memorials may be given in her name to the Iowa Foundation for the Blind, National Rivers Hall of Fame (Mississippi River Museum) and the University of Northern Iowa Foundation. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date at the University of Northern Iowa. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Eastern – Central – Western Iowa.
