Gladys Mahoney

Gladys M. (Frater) Mahoney, formerly Gladys Wenner, 81, of Westgate, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Hillcrest Living Campus in Sumner, Iowa. True to her quiet wishes, no services are being held at this time.

Gladys was born on January 26, 1945, in Vinton, Iowa, the daughter of Delos F. and Marie J. (Schmidt) Frater. She was raised and educated in Urbana, Iowa area graduating with the Class of 1963. She was united in marriage to Murray L. Wenner. To this union, two sons were born, Richard and Steve. The marriage later dissolved. Gladys was later united in marriage to LeRoy D. Mahoney. They resided on their acreage near the Westgate Sumner area, where they shared many years together.

Throughout her professional life, Gladys was known for her work ethic and diverse talents. She held various positions over her career, working diligently in retail, as a typesetter, secretary, and laborer. Outside of her professional endeavors, Gladys enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She was an avid league bowler, and took great pleasure in crafting, woodworking, gardening, and bird watching. She also took great pride in caring for the various animals on her acreage.

Her spirit and memory live on through her family. Gladys is survived by her two sons, Richard Wenner and Steve Wenner; her sister, Mae Laatsch of Madison, Wisconsin; her brother, Delos (Bob) Frater of Ladora, Iowa; her step-daughters, including Deb (Steve) Coyle of Westgate, Iowa; as well as a wonderful legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was preceded by those who passed before her: her parents, Delos F. and Marie J. Frater; her husband, LeRoy D. Mahoney; her first husband Murray L. Wenner; her brother, Frank E. Frater; her sister, Julie A. Fink; and her brother-in-law Howard (Bud) Laatsch.
