Douglas Lee Winders, 83, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026, at Dennis and Donna Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha, surrounded by his loving family.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 28th, at Concordia Lutheran Church, 4210 Johnson Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Beth; his daughter, Debbie (Bill) Settlage of Cedar Rapids; his son, Rod (Jill) of Solon; grandchildren, Allison (Drake) Bouzek, Stephen (Brittney) Settlage, Brianne (Jon) Hellman, Morgan (Marshall) Meade, Emma Winders (significant other Tyler), Maggie Winders (significant other Cade), and Cole Winders; great-grandchildren, Isabel and Raelyn Bouzek, Beckham and Liam Settlage, and Lily Hellman; sisters-in-law, Barbara Reynolds, Nancy Deklotz, and Becky Barr; and brother-in-law, Bill Rinderknecht.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jacob Winders; his parents; his brother, Ron; and his mother- and father-in-law.
Doug was born on September 11, 1943, to Myrle and Helen Winders in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Jefferson High School and earned his master’s degree in English from the University of Iowa. Doug dedicated 32 years to teaching in the Cedar Rapids and Pleasant Valley school districts.
Doug married his beloved wife, Beth, on July 30, 1966, in Atkins, Iowa. He enjoyed reading, woodworking, golfing—including the thrill of hitting a double eagle—baseball, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and all sports. Above all else, there was nothing more important to Doug than his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Concordia Lutheran Church, The Hospice of Mercy, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
