Obituary for David Lee Stauffer

David Lee Stauffer, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on September 9, 2026, following a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Services will be held at a later date. Iowa Cremation is assisting with arrangements. 

David was born in Rochester, New York on October 27, 1941, to Donald and Margaret “Peg” Stauffer. In his lifetime he lived in 11 states and had a variety of careers. His loves were people, art, music, movies, books, and sports (baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, boxing, and hockey).  He was a gifted artist with degrees in art from Arizona State University and studied art at the Cleveland Institute of Art.  Over his vibrant career, he shared his love of art as a docent for the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, and the Grant Wood Studio. He taught art at Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation, and the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy. His detailed pencil portraits, watercolors, landscapes, and mixed-media works have been displayed across eastern Iowa galleries and libraries.

He is survived by his grandsons, Cody Crofutt and Nathan Crofutt; great-granddaughter, Rose; his special friend, Kathy Geronzin. He leaves behind many friends who will deeply miss him.

David was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Shannon Crofutt.

His presence, kindness, and friendliness touched the lives of those around him. May he rest in peace, free from pain and worry.
