Shirley was born on January 6, 1936, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Clifford and Annis (Crosson) Kensler. She was one of seven children and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1954.
She grew up in the Oskaloosa area and later farmed near New Sharon, Iowa. In 1965, she moved to Springville, where she made her home for many years. Shirley worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids for 28 years before answering a call to missionary service that would take her around the world.

A woman of deep faith and adventurous spirit, Shirley spent many years sharing her Christian faith through missionary work in Russia, China, Bulgaria, Israel, and other countries. Her ministry touched countless lives, and she remained committed to serving others throughout her life.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Mark (Laurie) Woods of Anamosa, Iowa, Al Woods of Marion, Iowa, and John (Jean) Woods of Ryan, Iowa; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce McMickle of Urbandale, Iowa; brother, Victor Kensler of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Pat Kensler of Glendale, Arizona, many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
