Harry Dean Stegall

Celebrating the Life of Harry Dean Stegall

Harry Stegall, a man of immense heart, dedicated service, and a deep love for the Iowa outdoors, passed away leaving a legacy of warmth and devotion. Born on February 16, 1946, to Harry and Margaret Stegall in Dexter, Iowa, Harry’s roots were firmly planted in the soil of the family farm outside of Earlham, where he spent his youth.

On August 27, 1965, Harry married the love of his life, Lola Kopaska. Their union was the cornerstone of his world, spanning over six decades of unwavering partnership and mutual support.

Shortly after their marriage, Harry answered the call of duty when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served with distinction as part of the storied Big Red 1 during the Vietnam War. His two years of service shaped a man of character and resilience, traits he carried back with him to civilian life.  He followed that up with years in the Reserve and National Guard.

Upon his return, Harry was a man of many talents. He balanced a technical trade with an artistic eye, working as a skilled meat cutter while simultaneously pursuing his passion for photography. He owned and operated Stegall Studio, capturing the memories of his community through his lens. Ultimately, Harry spent most of his professional life in the food service industry, where his work ethic and personality were well-known.

Harry found his greatest peace in the natural world. Whether he was tracking morel mushrooms in the spring, bird watching from his porch, or out hunting and fishing, he was most at home in the fresh air. When he wasn't outdoors, Harry could often be found at a table surrounded by friends and family, engaged in a lively game of cards.

Harry’s greatest pride was his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and grandson, Odin. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lola Stegall; his three sons: Brad (Beth), Cory (Sara), and Harry (Rachel); eight grandchildren: Cody, Elizabeth, Anna, Bailey, Kennedy, Bo, Ava, and Ace; and three great grandchildren: Emma, Maverick, and Pheonix.

Harry was a man whose kind heart defined him. He was a pillar for his family and a friend to many. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on in the stories told over card games.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family requests that donations be made to Hope for the Warriors, CancerCare, or Alzheimer’s Association in Harry’s honor.

Condolences and cards for the family may be sent to 305 Northview Dr., Waukee, IA 50263.
