Delbert Ray Turner
Delbert Ray Turner, 82, of Newton, Iowa, went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 20, 2026, after a short battle with colon cancer.
Delbert was born on May 1, 1944, in Newton, Iowa, to Lyle M. Turner and Mildred A. (Billman) Turner. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1962. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served with the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles.” During those years, he met the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Judy Deaton. The two were married on November 18, 1963, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, laughter, and family.
During his military service, Del was stationed in Okinawa, where he and Judy lived from 1967 to 1969. After returning home to Newton, they continued to raise their three daughters and built a life rooted in faith, family, and community.
Del retired from the United States Post Office in 1999 after 30 years of dedicated service. Retirement didn’t slow him down for long, though. He later worked for Door Doc for several years to "stay out of trouble.” He worked alongside one of his best friends, Bill Septer or as Del affectionately called him, “Septic Tank” so naturally, the trouble continued.
Del enjoyed the simple things in life: chopping wood for the wood-burning stove, golfing, bowling, fishing, and spending time with family. Nothing brought him more joy than spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His quick wit and unforgettable sense of humor kept everyone around him laughing and prompted plenty of loving eye-rolls from Judy over the years.
Del will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his strong work ethic, and his deep sense of caring for others, always willing to help anyone in need. He will also be remembered for his playful spirit and the laughter he brought into every room. He leaves behind a legacy of love and countless cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Del was survived by his 3 daughters: Rhonda (Chris) Madzey, Monica (Dan) Bruxvoort, and Delani Turner (Brad Cope); 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister Suzanne Nail; sister-in-law Jerie Millard; brother in-law Neil Deaton; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Judy, his parents and 3 of his sisters: Glennys, Carolyn and Barb.
The family would like to thank Unity Point Hospice for the love and care they extended to Del and our family.
Services will be announced at a later date.
