Obituary for Curtis Ray Sorteberg

Curtis Ray Sorteberg passed away at home on May 16, 2026. He was born on April 23, 1943 in Harvey, North Dakota. Curt graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in chemistry education. He taught chemistry at high schools in Minnesota. Worked many years with Farmers Union. Lastly Curt worked for lowa State Government for over twenty years, retiring from IPERS.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents Oliver and Edna Sorteberg, his sisters Beverly, Jacqueline, Julie and brother Roger.

Curt is survived by his close companion, best friend and wife Lynne Van Clark, his children and grandchildren who carry forward his values, his laughter and his love of higher education: Anna Mather (Pete), Simone Sorteberg-Mills (Ross Mills) Tom Sorteberg and daughters Audrey and Ciera and Shawn Bright (Kerri) and their children Adison, Preston, Autumn and Ashlynne. Brothers Windy (Shirley) and Barry (Jodi)

Per Curt’s wishes no services will be held. In the spirit of the life Curt lived — one devoted to justice, generosity and caring for those with less, memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank of lowa or another charity who serves people in need.
