Shirley Ann DeNeve

Shirley Ann DeNeve, age 90, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, at the Keystone Care Center. Shirley was born in rural Vinton on October 7, 1935, to Carl and Nellie Covington. After attending country school through 6th grade, she graduated from Vinton High School. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Fred (Fritz) DeNeve on March 4, 1954, at Immaculate Conception in Van Horne, Iowa. Shirley and Fred’s greatest joy was their three daughters Julie, Cindy, and Mary and in their later years their grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Shirley was a homemaker until her children entered school and then she worked as a Breaker Technician at SqD for 30 years. She enjoyed fishing, reading, and creating miniatures for her doll house. Her legacy will be the love she had for her family. She is survived by her daughters Julie (Art) Helburg, Cindy Greteman, and Mary (Bob) Boots. Her cherished grandchildren are Jennifer Schnoebelen, Sarah (Ryan) Dollmeyer, Matthew Michalec, Mark Greteman, Lexie (Jeremy) Carlson, Joshua (Ashley) Lund, Jacob Lund, and Mandey Lund (Jeremiah) She also adored her 15 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law JoAnn McFarland and Becky DeNeve.

Shirley was welcomed to her heavenly home by Fred, her beloved husband of 58 years. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Hank and Clara DeNeve, her brothers Richard and Glen Covington, sister Edna Mae Eldridge, sister in-laws Patricia Flickinger, Nella Covington, brother in-laws Richard Eldridge, Gene DeNeve, Red McFarland, Ronald Flickinger, her son-in-law John Greteman, nephews Steven Eldridge, Lanny DeNeve, and niece Kathy Ponder, and her beloved dog. Maddie. 

A memorial service will be held at the Salem United Methodist Church, 205 3rd Avenue, Van Horne, on Monday, April 6, 2026, at 11 AM with a visitation starting at 10 AM.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Keystone Care Center and Essence of Life Hospice for their compassionate care of mom.

Memorials can be directed to the family and will be distributed among her favorite charities.
