Rose Brophy Wieland Pedersen

Rose was born on her family farm in rural Riverside, Iowa, to Leo and Margaret (Walsh) Brophy. She attended country school and St. Mary’s Catholic School, graduating in 1949, then attending and completing Floral Design school in Chicago in 1950.

Rose married Ron Wieland on March 31, 1951. They farmed in the Riverside area and were blessed with four children: Ann, Bill, Cathy, and Andy. Then the family moved to Iowa City in 1960, and in early 1961, the fifth child, Mariah, was welcomed into the family. While raising her family, Rose worked as a florist and at Owens Brush factory. In 1968, the family moved to Mt. Pleasant, where Rose and Ron owned and operated Wieland’s Flower and Garden Center from 1969 to 1977. After that, Rose remained very busy working at the Mt Pleasant travel agency, plus took classes at SE Community College and earned her CNA certification for employment at local care centers. In addition, she also worked at the Mt Pleasant Treatment Center, earning employee of the month for her efforts.

Following Ron’s passing in 1990, Rose returned to Iowa City. On April 23, 1994, she married Norman Pedersen. They lived in West Branch and cherished time at their cabin on the Cedar River near Mt. Vernon until Norm’s passing in 1998. Rose remained active well into her late 80s, working at local flower shops and serving as a CNA at the University of Iowa and VA hospitals. A parishioner of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Hills, she loved gardening, high school softball, and spending time with her family. She spent her later years in the Iowa City area.
