After the store closed in 1997, she continued working in accounting support roles at McCloud and Honkamp Krueger In Cedar Rapids before retiring.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, with frequent visits to northwest Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, and Florida.  She particularly enjoyed visting her kids and grandchildren in Las Vegas and in northern Virginia. She also enjoyed her trips to southern Spain with Greg and his wife Dia and Cozemel, Mexico, with Alan.  She loved owls, music, gardening, birdwatching, and shopping for unique souvenirs from the places they visited, esepcially spoons. Mardell enjoyed baking and cooking and her chocolate chip cookies were always popular.  She was always there when you needed her.

Mardell had a great laugh, loved life, and looked to the next day with hope. She will be fondly remembered and cherished by her husband of 63 years, Alan; daughter Virginia (Ginny) Adams; son Gregory Adams; and two grandchildren, Aidan Adams and Ariana Adams.  Mardell was preceded in death by her infant brother, William Hauck, sisters Lavelle Eaton and Marjorie Mawdsley, and brothers Wallace Hauck and Gordon Hauck.
