Dalton J. Shapo Jr.
Dalton J. Shapo Jr., 80, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Silver Oak Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 23, 1945, in Manhattan, New York, Dalton was the only child of Dalton J. Shapo and Carmen (Rodriguez) Shapo, both of whom preceded him in death.
Dalton earned a Bachelor's and a Master’s degree in marketing from Franklin & Marshall College and Buena Vista University, respectively. Throughout his career, he owned and operated college textbook stores, combining his entrepreneurial spirit with a lifelong appreciation for education and learning.
On April 20, 1978, Dalton married Sandra Gordon in Lincoln, Nebraska. They shared many years together until Sandra's passing on September 20, 2022. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters and a family that brought Dalton immense pride and joy.
A proud New York native, Dalton remained a devoted fan of the Brooklyn (now LA) Dodgers throughout his life. He often joked that he became a Dodgers fan because his father was a Yankees fan. He loved classic film noir movies, reading Sports Illustrated, had a special fondness for hippos, and enjoyed sharing humorous stories about his European travels as a young adult with family and friends.
Above all, Dalton cherished his family. He is survived by his daughters, Danielle (Mark) Jannusch of Marion, Iowa and Jacqueline De La Cour of Portland, Oregon; and his four beloved grandchildren, Hannah, Alexander, Emma, and Hayley.
Dalton will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Silver Oak Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for all of the love and support they showed Dalton, while he was in their care.
