Betty Jean was born on November 14, 1946, to Joseph William and Marie Elizabeth (Kelly) Kane in Independence, Iowa. Betty Jean graduated from East Buchanan High School in 1964. On February 27, 1965, Betty Jean married James (Boomer) Bateman, together they had three daughters, Kelly, Kim and Kody. Betty Jean had an in-home day care while her daughters were young and later owned her own cleaning business.
Betty Jean was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop where she was very active and a longtime member of the church choir. Betty Jean’s Catholic faith was extremely important to her. She was also active in her community, including volunteering at the Winthrop Library, being named Winthrop Citizen of the Year in 2013. She enjoyed card club with friends, gardening with Boomer, holiday baking with the family and was an avid reader. As her family grew, they began their Annual Bateman Vacay to various state parks and cabin rentals throughout Iowa. This annual trip was a highlight to everyone in the family. This year will mark our 26th vacation where she will be with us in spirit.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James (Boomer) of Winthrop, her daughters, Kelly (Curt) King, Independence; Kim, Cedar Rapids; Kody (Tom) McGuire, Mount Vernon; 5 grandchildren who referred to her as Gram; Taylor (Mitchel) Brown, Paige (Trevor Holt) King, Ben (Caitlin Keane) McGuire, Jillian McGuire & Griffin McGuire, 5 great grandchildren who referred to her as GG, Jocelyn & Eleanor Brown, Kingsley, Leora (Rory) & Ripley Holt; brother Bill (Hollie) Kane, Coggon, sister-in-laws, Myrna Kane, Quasqueton; Charlotte Knipper, Cascade and Arlene Bateman, Ankeny and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe & Marie Kane and her brother, Bob Kane.
