Michael Vercande
Michael Joseph Vercande, 59, of Des Moines, passed away January 25, 2026, at Veterans Hospital, Des Moines from pancreatic cancer.
Mike was the youngest child of Leo Vercande and Patricia Dansdill. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids and later joined the United States Army.
Mike is survived by his three sisters and two brothers, many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who were always there for him. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He said goodbye to his cat “kids”, Callie and Trouble, and gave them to his nephew to love and care for, now that he is gone. His cat, Stinker, will be with Mike forever.
Mike was active in the Des Moines Jaycee’s as a member and was a Governor of the Des Moines chapter. He loved being involved in Jaycee’s Haunted House. He was a volunteer for Iowa Public Television’s yearly pledge drive and downtown Farmer’s Market.
His family wishes to thank the staff at the Veterans Extended Care floors at Veterans Hospital for his last few days.
A service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2026, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, Iowa.
