Obituary for Douglas N. Smith

Douglas N. Smith, age 70, of North Royalton, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home on August 2, 2026.

Doug was born on October 6, 1955, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Edward Adalph Smith and Delores Louise (Woten) Smith.

Doug dedicated much of his life to protecting and caring for others. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 24 years before continuing his commitment to public service with the Broadview Heights, OH Police Department. Throughout his life, he demonstrated integrity, dedication, and a deep sense of duty to his community, country and family.

Doug generously volunteered with his local food pantry and dedicated his time mentoring young people through the Young Marines program. Doug was a lifelong sports enthusiast who rarely missed cheering on the Cleveland Guardians and enjoyed following college sports. He had a gift for making people laugh, never passing up the chance to tell a good story or crack a joke. More than anything, Doug loved the Lord. He found great joy in studying God's Word and growing in his relationship with Jesus Christ.

Doug is lovingly survived by his daughter, Morgan Mace (Anthony), and his son, Avery Smith. He also leaves behind family, friends, fellow veterans, former colleagues, and all whose lives were enriched by his friendship, humor, and generous spirit. 

In keeping with Doug's wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Doug's lifelong dedication to serving others.

Doug's legacy of faith, service, laughter, and love will be remembered always by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
