William "Bill" Stein

William “Bill” Stein, 80, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.

Bill was born on January 18, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa, to Marian and Frank Stein. He graduated from West High School before going on to attend the University of Northern Iowa, where he met and married his first wife, Janet, with whom he had two sons. From an early age, Bill had a deep love of sports and community, spending much of his youth actively involved at his local YMCA — first as a participant and later as a staff member. After many fulfilling years, Bill retired from the YMCA and enjoyed a new role in sales with Midwest Publishing & Marketing.

On June 19, 1993, Bill married Debra, and together they built a joyful life filled with racquetball, golf, card games, Arizona golf trips, and road trips to visit family. He and Deb were also active members of their church. Deb preceded him in death in 2015, and her absence left a lasting mark on all who loved them together.

Bill loved the Dodgers and was a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes who was not often seen without his favorite Hawkeye hat. He loved watching TV with a bowl of ice cream and in later years, spending his winters in California where he golfed to his heart’s content and socialized with neighbors and new friends.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Marian and Frank Stein, and his wife, Debra Stein.

He is survived by his sons, James (Amy) Stein of Waynesboro, PA, and Jeffrey (Brenda) Stein of West Des Moines, Iowa; his step-daughter, Lindsay (Cale) Jasper of Marion, Iowa; his stepson, Eric Kohnen of St. Mary’s, Georgia; his grandchildren, Kristin, Cooper, Connor, Evan, Will, and Hadley; his siblings, Vic (Mary Jo) Stein, Rita (Dick) Folbrecht, and Marlo (Dick) Jack; his companion, Donna Feigenbaum; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are pending.
