Willard “Sonny” Kies
Willard John “Sonny” Kies, of Cedar Rapids, passed away April 1, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, after injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, he was 82.
Willard was born January 17, 1944 in Cedar Rapids to Willard Kies and Patricia Riley. Willard served in the United States Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran.
Bill was an accomplished welder at Universal Engineering for nearly 30 years. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and working on cars, riding his motorcycle, and many more hobbies.
Survivors include a son, Shawn (Mindy) Kies of Vinton, Iowa, daughters, Vicky Kies of Marion, Iowa, Rhonda Kies of Vinton, Iowa, Kim Kies of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Lora Kies of Mount Vernon, Iowa. Grandchildren, Jordynne, Dylan, Teeana, Kyleigh, Keegan, Layla, Charity, Patience, and Faith. Great-grandchildren, Easton and Emerson, as well as many nieces and nephews. His brothers, Don Kies, Raymond (Mary) Kies, and Roger Kies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gloria (Dedrick) Kies, brothers, Mick Kies and Lee Kies, along with a sister, Edna (Sis) Dedrick.
