Randy was born on August 31, 1955 to Theodore Eugene and Norma Catherine (Foster) Routt in Waterloo, Iowa. He attended East High in Waterloo where he graduated in 1975. He received a football scholarship to attend Iowa State University for a year before joining the Marine Corps. He proudly served in the Marine Corps from 1977 to 1981 and is a Vietnam veteran. After leaving the Marines, Randy was introduced to Sherrie by their fathers, who worked together at the Bucks Stadium in Waterloo. He was united in marriage to Sherrie Christensen on July 18, 1983 in Knoxville, TN.  Randy enjoyed many things in life, such as watching sports and coaching his son in King's Knights baseball, catching up with friends and family, traveling, and the Tennessee Volunteers.

Randy took every opportunity to show and discuss how proud he was of his marriage to Sherrie, his love for his children and mostly, how much he adored his grandkids. He was employed at Carolina Shoe in NC until returning to Iowa where he then worked at XL Trailers and then Ryder Logistics.

Survivors include his wife, Sherrie, whom he loved for 45 years; his children, Lawrence Routt (Julia) of Atkins, Nichole Harper (Travis) of Oelwein, Jamie Weber (Corey) of Lamont, Melissa Allison (Corey) of Waterloo. Grandchildren Hunter, Sawyer, Emmy, Stella, Kinsley, Nathan, Natalie, and Isabella; his brother, Terry Routt (Laurie) of Jesup and honorary brother, Lamar Wiggins of Morganton, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Norma; his father-in-law, Lawrence Christensen and his sister, Jeania.
