Fred Alfredo Rivas
Alfredo “Fred” Rivas, Sr., 79 of Des Moines, Iowa died Sunday, April 26, 2026, at home. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 15, 2026, at Wakonda Christian Church in Des Moines at 5:00 p.m. Dinner will be provided after the service.
Fred, son of John and Trinidad Rivas, was born November 14, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Fred married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Elaine Schroeder at Union Park Presbyterian Church in Des Moines on October 2, 1965.
He graduated from North High School in 1967 and was a devoted Electrician for IBEW, Local Union #347 for 49 years.
Fred was a builder, a wood worker, a gardener of watermelons, tomatoes and green beans. He terraced our back yard, built and re-built car/truck engines and in fact there is a built engine in our basement…I’m taking offers. He loved family dinners and my homemade apple pies. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Vikings.
Fred is survived by his wife Marlene; their children: Tena (John) Stewart, Deborah (Sean) Elston, Sherry Rivas, and Alfredo Rivas, Jr.; grandchildren: Michael, John (Lisa), Thomas and Lauren Stewart, Ericka and Logan Elston, Hans III (Valorie), Skyler Nissen, Jade Anderson, and Adrienne Rivas; great grandchildren: Josh, Lilian, Kelsey, Nate, Cooper, Jackson, Hans IV, Wyatt, and Lucas; siblings: Laurance (Phally), Joe, and Vickie Rivas, and Anita Petty; niece, Martha Alba; long time childhood friend, Lowell Abarr; and companion pet dog, “Pepper”.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rebecca Kellis and Mary Furry; and many extended family members.
Special thanks to Mercy One Hospice of Des Moines and the Parkinson’s Society. A cremation has been arranged by Iowa Cremation in Waukee, Iowa.
