Mildred Louise Twombley
Mildred Louise Twombley, 97, of Mt. Ayr, Iowa passed away on September 27, 2025, at Clearview Nursing Home. Mildred was born on July 20, 1928, in Andover, Missouri to Joe and Edith Thorpe.
Mildred married Richard Twombley on February 15, 1948, in Davis City, Iowa. The couple had two children, Leroy and Connie. Mildred was a homemaker but would occasionally do some cleaning of people’s houses.
Mildred loved her family. She always enjoyed visiting with her family. She had a caring heart and loved deeply. In her family, she was the matriarch and began the tradition of making everyone grilled peanut butter sandwiches. She made the best homemade chicken and noodles that she learned to make from her mother-in-law, Ruth.
In her free time, Mildred enjoyed making macrame hangers and crocheting probably 100 afghans for family and friends. Johnny Carson, Price Is Right, and Wheel of Fortune were a few of her favorite television shows. She also loved watching Lawrence Welk. The song “Blowing In The Wind” became a favorite for Mildred.
Mildred actually learned to love car racing. She also liked to ride her 3 wheeled bike, because she never learned to drive a car and she never wanted to learn. It made her too nervous.
Mildred will be greatly missed by her son, Lee Twombley of Florida; daughter, Connie Trumbull of Eagleville, Missouri; and granddaughter, Kelly Cunningham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; sister, Josephine Strong; and brothers, Jim Thorpe and Leo Thorpe.
