Robert is survived by a sister, Phyllis Massman of West Union IA; son Mark (Mary Lou) Tillman of Waucoma IA; daughter Patty (Lowell) Johnson of Madison WI; son Edward (Suzanne) Tillman of Roseville MN, grandchildren Laura Niquette, Kristin Niquette, Grace Tillman and Adam Tillman; and step-grandchildren Tina Schmidt Cahoy, Janet Schmidt Snyder, Denise Schmidt and Donald Schmidt.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Cynthia Ann; his parents, Edward and Catherine Tillman; siblings and spouses Dorothy (Romanus) Junk, Marcellus (Gertrude) Tillman, John (Elizabeth) Tillman, Margerite (Donald) Stammeyer, Herbert (Elizabeth) Tillman, Alvera (Marvin) Kleve, Merle (Pamela) Tillman; infant brother Joseph Tillman; niece Susan Stammeyer; and nephew Warren Massman.
Robert was born February 9, 1937 in Lawler IA, and graduated from Waucoma High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958, and married the love of his life, Cynthia, in 1959. They moved to Waterloo IA where Robert was employed with the U.S. Postal Service. He then obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he and Cynthia gave their children a lifetime of memories from their summer trips to Lost Valley Resort in Vergas MN. Robert was a longtime HAM radio operator, avid cyclist, and made the best pancakes. He will be remembered for his grit and determination, which enabled him to achieve anything he set his mind to. At the time of his passing, he was at peace and looking forward to being reunited with his wife. The family is grateful for the kindness, care and support provided by Gunderson Lutheran Palmer Hospice, which eased our parents’ passings.
Robert considered it an honor to serve in the U.S. Army and was a dedicated member of the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s memory to the American Legion, www.legion.org
