Raymond Lawrence Hendrickson

Raymond Lawrence Hendrickson, 96, passed away on June 14, 2025 at University Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be Saturday, June 21 from 1:00 to 1:45 followed by a brief service at Melrose Meadows Wellness Center in Iowa City. 

Ray was born on March 27, 1929 in Washington, Iowa to Lawrence and Inez (Whisler) Hendrickson. His father passed away in 1936. His mother was remarried in 1938 to Harley DeVore.  

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, a daughter, Jan (Dean) Hoover, Cedar Falls, daughter-in-law, Shelly Hendrickson, Aurora, CO, stepdaughters, Jerri Stockman, Tiffin, Debb (Dave) Rogers, Casper, WY; and a stepson, Scott ( Jane  Oglesby) Cedar Rapids; 12 grandchildren, Daniel, David, Jeff, Jordan, Madison, Brook, Nicole, Andy, Ben, Brock, Jill and Cassandra; 17 great grandchildren, Kenny, Eliza, Miles, Jamison, Rayne, Eoin, Hadley, Maddux, Kayla, Drake,  Dayne, Lonni, Cactus Jack, Carmine, Calyn, Camille and Killian; a half brother, Harley (Char) DeVore, Bettendorf, IA and two nephews.  

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Scott.  

Although Ray lived in many places throughout his life, he proudly considered himself a product of Cotter, IA. He held many jobs starting with plowing fields with a team of horses at age 10. He proudly served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was involved in banking, insurance, he was CEO of McKee Button Company and ran a hardware store with his wife, Shirley. They retired to Arizona in 1994 returning to Iowa in 2004 to run the Mission House B&B in Iowa City where they made lifelong friends and became adoptive grandparents to U of I students. After retiring again in 2014, Ray became a writer of 3 self published books sharing editorials and words of wisdom such as: “The truth of life is that a person does not succeed in spite of challenges and difficulties, but rather, precisely because of them.” His final years were spent at Melrose Meadows where he and Shirley made friends who became family. Ray will be remembered for his kindness, his love of family and passing on his passion of recording your memories.
