Martha Montross Huffman
Martha Montross Huffman passed away on June 23, 2025, in Iowa City at The Bird House-Hospice Home of Johnson County. She was surrounded by her loving family. A private memorial service will be held.
She was born on February 22, 1928, in Millersburg, Iowa to William “Dewey” and Margaret (Richards) Montross. She married Robert D. Huffman on April 1, 1950. Together they had four children: William, David, Rachel, and Bobby. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1967 and went on to teach elementary school for Hills, Solon, and Riverside School Districts. She later began a career as a Realtor and Antique Dealer in Iowa City. Martha and Bob retired in Arizona and spent nearly 20 years there before relocating back to Iowa City. Martha’s passion was her family, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest joys. She enjoyed cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and wore her #22 Caitlin Clark jersey with pride. Basketball was her favorite sport and she played guard for Deep River-Millersburg and coached the girls’ team at Clear Creek-Oxford. She was a fiercely independent and hard working woman who was still driving at 95 and living with minimal assistance up until the time of her death. She will always be remembered for her strong will and love of family.
Martha is survived by her children, William, David, and Rachel (Michael) Hammer; grandchildren, Kristen (Mike) Meehan, Robert (Jennifer) Hammer, Skyler (Kristina) Huffman, Benjamin Hammer, Charlotte Huffman, Carson Hammer, Meghan (Jarrod) Gatlin, and Aimee Huffman; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers (Hugh and Charles), her husband, and youngest son, Bobby.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Iowa City Hospice and The Bird House for their quality and compassionate care. Memorial contributions may be given to The Bird House PO Box 3338 Iowa City, IA 52244-3338. They are 501(c)(3).
