Bob “Bucky” Buckner

Bob “Bucky” Buckner, 75, of South English, passed away peacefully at home on July 26, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Born on May 26, 1950, in Bridgewater, Iowa, Bob was the son of Leon and Margaret Buckner. He graduated from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School and proudly served four years in the United States Air Force. Bob was a dedicated veteran, and throughout the years he enjoyed sharing his service stories with his grandchildren’s classmates during Veterans Day assemblies.

On July 17, 1970, he married the love of his life, Gloria. The two just celebrated 55 years of marriage—a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Together they raised two children, Eric and Schay, and later welcomed five grandchildren who became the light of his life.

In 1980, Bob became the proud owner of the grocery store in North English. What began as a business quickly became a beloved cornerstone of the community. For over 40 years, “Bucky” worked tirelessly to serve the town—always remembering your name, your usual order, and greeting you with his contagious smile. His meat-cutting skills were second to none, and the store felt like a second home to so many. In his last decade running it, he was joined by Gloria, who brought her sparkle to the produce section and her steadiness by his side.

Bob was a true outdoorsman. He loved nothing more than being outside—hunting, fishing, and chasing coyotes. But his favorite place of all were the bleachers and outfield, cheering on his grandkids at every game he could. Just this past year, he beamed with pride watching Carly and the Sigourney Savages take home a state softball championship. That moment was everything to him.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Margaret, and his siblings Larry, Max, Cecil, Terry, Beth, and Patty.

He is survived by his wife Gloria; his children Eric (Angie) Buckner and Schay (Will) Moore; and his cherished grandchildren Josh, Jessica, Carly, Graham, and Berkly. He is also survived by his siblings Scott (Linda) Buckner and Cindy (Mike) Chafa; sisters-in-law Wanda, Linda, Ardith, and Brenda; and a large, loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, August 16th, from 2:00–5:00 PM at the South English Fire Department, with a family tribute beginning at 4:00 PM. In true Bucky fashion, it will be casual, heartfelt, and full of stories.

Bob's legacy is one of quiet strength, kindness, and connection. He taught us the value of hard work, the joy in a well-timed joke, and the deep love that comes from showing up—every day, for the people who matter.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be made to several organizations on Bob’s behalf.
