David Victor Hoagland
David Victor Hoagland, 85 of Cedar Rapids, passed away at Mercy Hospice in Hiawatha, IA after a long battle with Crohn’s Disease on February 16, 2025.
A celebration of life funeral will be held on April 5, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. at Noelridge Christian Church at 7111 C Ave NE in Cedar Rapids, IA. A private family burial will take place at Cedar Memorial in Cedar Rapids, IA in May of 2025.
David was born on September 14, 1939, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA to Paul Revere and Georgia Mary (Dvorak) Hoagland. Georgia’s parents immigrated from Czechoslovakia, settling on a ranch in Montana. He attended Lisbon High School where he lettered as a short stop in baseball, graduating in 1957. Thereafter, he entered the U.S Marine Corps from 1957 until 1959 and served at Twenty-Nine Palms, CA where he was honorably discharged as Lance Corporal Hoagland with a Good Conduct Medal.
David met the love of his life, Susan Rae Miller, when they each joined a spring singles bowling club at May City Bowl in Cedar Rapids. They dated until their marriage on September 30, 1961, at the Old St. Joseph’s Church in Marion, IA. Together, David and Susan raised four children, Stacia, Vicky, David M. and Theresa. David and Susan enjoyed taking their children on an annual vacation, visiting the Black Hills of South Dakota, Saint Louis, MO and Florida to see the various sights and visit with their parents, and their children’s grandparents.
David worked as a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) master machinist at Cherry-Burrell where he stood at the workstation for the entire shift, often in the sweltering heat. David was a staunch union rights advocate, who made his voice heard, and a member of the United Auto Workers. No matter how hard he consistently worked, he spent time with his family during weekends, barbecuing, watching Iowa Hawkeyes football and his favorite baseball team the Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed the holidays and special events with extended family members.
David loved to stay busy outdoors, taking walks along trails with Susan, as well as going on picnics with his family, and fishing with his mother, especially when she came from Florida for a visit. Summer weekends were also spent caring for his lawn, taking care of household needs or various projects always waiting for him on his garage workbench! Enjoyment also came from listening to Johnny Cash and watching John Wayne movies, or any westerns!
David was very convinced in his love for Jesus Christ-our savior and Lord! He read scripture each and every day.
David is survived by his wife Susan; their children, Stacia (Jerry) Pena, Vicky (Scott) Wieser, Theresa (Doug) Mason, and David M. (Kathleen-in memoriam) Hoagland, all of Cedar Rapids, IA; sisters Patricia Dye, Katharin (David) Ducett of Bonita Springs, FL; brother Steven (Pam) Hoagland of Greer, SC; sister-in-law Taylor Miller of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law Steve (Toni) Miller of California; grandchildren Travis (Danielle) and Darin Emerson, Christa (Ramon) Rodriguez, Christian and Lucas (Emily) Severson, Brittany S. (Thomas) Hogue, Victoria L. and Jason P. Hoagland, Angela (Callissa) Mason, Sarah (Alex) Mason; 12 great grandchildren; aunt Jessie Stastny, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws Babe and Maxine (Stastny) Miller; sister Diana (Rufus) Biggs; brother and sister-in-law Terry and Diana Miller; grandparents Tilden Victor (T.V.) and Helen Hoagland; nephew Douglas Brandmill; and son-in-law Myron A.
