Walter David Smith

Walter David Smith (66) of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Irwin, Pennsylvania, died of cancer on September 5, 2024. Per Walt’s request, there will be no viewing or funeral. A celebration of life will be held later.

Walt was born on December 11, 1957, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He drove trucks for many years hauling groceries, petroleum, ethanol, jet fuel, and CO2 for SuperValu, POET Biofuels, and others. Walt earned numerous awards for safe driving and even won a trucking rodeo. Daughters Dana and Tiffany have fond memories swimming with their dad after his long workday.

Walt was a salt of the earth person. He donated to needy children abroad and veterans at home. His only vice was an insatiable sweet tooth, but he was sure to share treats with grandson and “Little Buddy” Nolan and granddaughter Hartley, who affectionately called him “Pappy Doodles.”

Walt is preceded in death by his father Arthur Smith of Daisytown, PA. Survivors include his mother Phyllis Smith of Rostraver, PA; children Dana (Matthew) Walsh of Waukee, IA; Tiffany Smith of Herminie, PA; grandchildren Nolan and Hartley Walsh of Waukee, IA; siblings William (Connie) Smith of Derry, PA; Mary Anne (René) Von Arx of Brigham, QC; Carol Smartnick of Greensburg, PA; Edie (Kevin) Welshons of Ligonier, PA; Esther Todd of Seymour, TN; Patricia Gillon of Rostraver, PA; and many nieces and nephews. The family is indebted to Shaun Faeth of Ankeny, IA, for her companionship and devotion to Walt.

Instead of flowers, Walt encourages working readers to find time for fun now. Our retirement years are not guaranteed.

“You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world…Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16
