Raymond J. Cortez,75 of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2024, in Cedar Rapids surrounded by his family. A celebration of life will be held on October 20th from 10am-2pm at the Classic Event Center located at 3607 1st Ave SE Suite A, Cedar Rapids, Ia 52402.
He was born on January 26, 1949, in Sacramento, CA to Frank Cortez and Mildred Kerr (Cannady). Ray enjoyed taking family vacations in the RV, being part of a CB radio group, going out in storms to help people in need. He also spent his time fishing, hunting morel mushrooms, pulling practical jokes on anyone he could, traveling in his later years, and spending time at Sharpless Auctions. Ray loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He was particularly close with his grandson James. It wasn’t very often that you would find Ray without James by his side.
Raymond is survived by Mary Cortez; his children; Monique (Joe) Derflinger, Barb (Stephen) Close, Jodelle (Damon) Franklin, Crystal (Cory) Shelton, Mike (Brenda) Cortez, Joe Cortez; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings; Frank (Chris), Lola (Tony), Connie, Violet (Dave), Sandi, Jose and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded into death by his parents; daughter Justine, brothers; Henry, Joe, Carl, Skip, and sisters; Rada and Yolanda.
