Marilyn Ruth Wedemeier, born on January 21, 1934, to Marvin and Hazel Mae (Book) Burkhart, went home to our Lord on May 22, 2024, leaving behind a tapestry of memories woven with love, laughter, and cherished moments. Marilyn's life was a testament to faith, family, and community, and her presence illuminated the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born on a serene farm in Banks Township of Fayette County, Hawkeye, Iowa, Marilyn's early years were steeped in the beauty of rural life. Her journey of faith began at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, where she was baptized, attended Sunday school, parochial school, and later confirmed on March 21, 1948. Marilyn's unwavering devotion to her faith would remain a guiding light throughout her life.
Marilyn graduated with the class of 1953 from the rural and public schools of Hawkeye. Her passion for cosmetology led her to enroll in Pitzies Cosmetology School in Waterloo, Iowa, where she honed her skills and graduated in 1954, marking the beginning of her fulfilling career in the beauty industry.
On the romantic Valentine's Day of February 14, 1955, Marilyn exchanged vows with her beloved Henry Wedemeier at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Together, they embarked on a journey of love, laughter, and shared dreams. They moved to Oelwein, where Henry pursued a career in construction, while Marilyn continued her work in the beauty shop. Subsequently, Marilyn embarked on a new chapter, working at Schwans in West Union for five years. Following the company's relocation, she transitioned to providing childcare for 17 years while residing near the park. This period of her life was marked by her dedication to both her professional endeavors and her commitment to nurturing and caring for others.
Marilyn's dedication extended beyond her professional life. She was an active member of her community, serving in various capacities, including as a member of the Martha Circle and stewardship committees, where she tirelessly worked on projects for Lutheran World Relief. Marilyn also found joy in her involvement with the American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as Chaplain, offering comfort and support to fellow members.
After the passing of her beloved Henry on March 13, 2008, Marilyn's strength and resilience remained unwavering. She continued to embrace life with zest, moving to West Union in May 2015 to be closer to family. Marilyn remained an active member of her community, enjoying her involvement in bingo at Cedar Court and her continued participation in church activities at Hawkeye Lutheran Church.
