Barbara “Barb” E. Spicer
Barbara “Barb” E. Spicer, 75, of South English, passed away after an extended illness on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma & friend. A celebration of life gathering will be held on Wednesday, June 19, from 4-7 pm at the North Keokuk County Fire Department in South English.
Barb was born February 3, 1949, to Glenn & Viola Gibson Hale in San Francisco, CA. She met the love of her life, Larry, at the USO in San Francisco. After a whirlwind romance, they were united in marriage on October 5, 1969, in Mill Valley, CA. Together, they had one child, Chandra.
She held various jobs over the years with the most recent (and most dear to her heart) as Director of the South English Library. In the last few years focusing on the business she had with her husband.
She loved spending her time dancing, singing, needlepoint, swimming, cross country skiing, Rev War reenactments with her daughter and husband, hiking at Mount Tam, and going on walks with her husband. When she wasn't prancing through the house with one of her grandchildren on her hip, she enjoyed having conversations on anything that came up, always having some random tidbit of knowledge to add. Sweets were her weakness, and Baileys was her "sweet drink". Even when her husband was trying to reduce the amount of sugar she was consuming, her grandchildren were constantly sneaking her dark chocolate and coffee brimmed with sweetness.
Left to cherish her memories is her husband, Larry; daughter - Chandra (Aaron) Harper of South English, IA; foster children – Tracy Felkins of Ottumwa, IA, Kasei Collins of Cleveland, OH, John Fuller of South Sioux City, NE & many others; grandchildren - Christopher Spicer, Destiny Harper, Tori Harper (Chris Malfese), Braeden and Blake Murphy; bonus grandson Colton (Rachel) Corbett; great-grandchildren - DeJia, Atlas and Torin; siblings - Kathi (John) Sorensen of El Dorado Hills, CA, Glenda Nordmeyer (Stan) of Bermuda Dunes, CA and Doug (Jann) Hale of Sequim, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial donations may be directed to the family.
