Patricia ‘Patti’ Lynn Bergstrom

Patricia ‘Patti’ Lynn Bergstrom, a Cedar Rapids resident since 1971, passed away February 9, 2024, after a short illness. Born January 23,1948, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Marilyn and Robert Bergstrom, Patti was the first of their four children. She is survived by sisters Carol Webb and Kathy Bergstrom, and brother Bob Bergstrom. From birth, Patti was a special person who deeply influenced what the Bergstrom family would become and where they were to live, eventually settling in Iowa in 1970.

Patti was a gentle woman who loved her parents, friends, family, and animals, especially cats. She had a strong memory and could recall the names of every pet she ever had, including many cats and dogs, two raccoons, two horses, a goose, a duck, and other creatures. Patti remembered the birthdate of every friend and family member. She had a sharp wit and was famous for her unfiltered observations, which were cherished by all. Patti loved to have fun, to laugh and dance. Once Patti managed to break her hip while enthusiastically dancing to “Footloose” to which she remarked, “I was a bit too foot loose.”

She enjoyed working in Linn County’s Sheltered Workshop. An Iowa Hawkeyes fan, Patti was particularly proud of her performance in the Special Olympics, winning many medals from the early 2000’s through 2011.

A deeply religious person who started life as a Catholic, Patti later attended Baptist churches in the area. For years she taught Sunday school to preschoolers and occasionally sang in the choir. Patti was caring and generous. She donated to animal shelters and would often give away her warm clothes to others who, she said, needed them. Even in death she donated her organs. The world was a better place with Patti.

Her memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on March 9 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 4640 North River Blvd. NE, Cedar Rapids. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Patti’s name to the Special Olympics or a local animal shelter. On April 2, Patti will be interred next to her mother and father in St. Augustine, Florida.
