Douglas A. Hladek, Sr.

Douglas A. Hladek, Sr., 85 of Cedar Rapids, IA, passed away on 2/12/2024. He passed away at Promise House due to Lewy Body Dementia. We are grateful to Promise House and Campassus for their compassionate care.

Doug was born January 7, 1939, to Anthony and Bessie (Buresh) Hladek. He grew up near Czech Village in Cedar Rapids and spent a lot of time with his father on 16th Ave, where he loved to practice speaking Czech. Doug served in the United States Air Force as Crew Chief with the 31st Fighter Squadron. During his service he traveled around Africa and Europe. After his military service, Doug served on the CR Fire Department and eventually worked at Cherry Burrell. In his spare time, Doug enjoyed participating in the CR Corvette Club, Izaak Walton League and model railroading. His passion for trains led to an intricately designed layout that was highly regarded amongst fellow hobbyists.

Doug met Barbara E. (Bridges) Hladek, and they married in 1961. They lived their entire lives in Cedar Hills but loved to travel and took many trips and cruises over the years. Some of their favorite places included Estes Park, CO., Jamaica, Aruba and Kalispell, MT. Doug and Barbara were blessed with two children whom they loved very much, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his children, Douglas A. Hladek Jr. and Diane R. Lingenfelter (Rusty); grandchildren,  Samantha Maske (Brandon), Lee, Jay and  Margaret Lingenfelter; great granddaughters, Blaire and Amelia Maske. He was preceded in passing by his wife Barbara and parents Anthony and Bessie Hladek.

A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
