Douglas W. Freeman

Douglas W. Freeman, 83, of Swisher, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on December 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and his beloved dog, Cricket. Doug was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend who lived a life of service, courage, and passion.

Doug was born on August 8, 1941, to Lloyd V. and Geneve (Thrapp) Freeman. He graduated from University High School in Iowa City and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, where he developed the discipline and determination that guided his life.

After his military service, Doug began his law enforcement career with the Iowa City Police Department. On October 7, 1967, he married the love of his life, Karen L. Koser, and the couple later moved to Detroit, Michigan, where Doug joined the Detroit Police Department. Doug and Karen welcomed their daughter, Stephenie Ruth, into the world on February 10, 1971, a moment that brought him immense joy and pride.

During his time with the Detroit Police Department, Doug worked undercover in narcotics until he transitioned to the Homicide Division. He earned his bachelor's degree from Madonna University  and was promoted to Sergeant. Throughout his distinguished career, Doug received two citations for service excellence, a testament to his dedication and skill.
Doug retired from the police force in 1994 and returned to Iowa with Karen to fulfill a lifelong dream of building their dream home. Retirement didn’t slow him down; he worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals in security, as an electrician alongside his friend Roy Anderson, and in construction with his friend Paul Sueppel.

Doug had a zest for life and a wide array of interests. He was an avid runner, a passionate golfer, and a lifelong fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Detroit sports teams. He cherished time spent with family and friends and found joy in the simple pleasures of life, from a good round of golf to cheering on his favorite teams.

Doug is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Karen; his beloved daughter, Stephenie (Ryan); cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Dustin, Emmaleigh, and Payton; and his brother, Lloyd (Ann). He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd V. and Geneve, as well as his brother, Greg, and his sister, Sharon

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Doug’s remarkable life at an Open House on Sunday, January 19, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at his home, 1629 Trishia Court NW, Swisher, IA.

Doug will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
