Doris Galligan
Doris Galligan passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2024, at New Hampton's Nursing and Rehab. Doris was born and raised in North Washington, Iowa, the second child of Anthony and Agatha (Linkenmeyer) Wegner. After high school, Doris worked as a secretary at the ASCS office in New Hampton. She met her husband, Jim, at a dance on an extremely cold January evening, in 1958. They married that October and began their family soon after Jim’s return from the service.
Early in their marriage, Doris helped Jim farm. Doris managed a huge garden and canned jars and jars of produce. She enjoyed making meals that were completely homegrown. Doris was a gifted seamstress, making clothes for the whole family. She even took on the challenge of sewing Barbie doll dresses, which must have been an exercise in love and patience. Doris chronicled the family's growing years, filling photo albums with images captured with a journalistic flair.
Once the kids were all in school, Doris enjoyed engaging with the public as the deputy County Recorder for Chickasaw County, retiring after nearly 20 years. Throughout her life, Doris loved traveling with Jim. Her favorite destinations included Jamaica, Acadia National Park, Washington D. C., Florida (particularly walking the beaches), the Grand Canyon and multiple West Coast trips.
Doris passed on her love of movies, a love of the outdoors and a love of savoring the little things in life. Known to regularly laugh until nearly breathless and crying, her wit and wisdom lives on through her loved ones. Her observant quips and unique made-up words (often hilarious) bring immeasurable joy, even in grief. The best moments and memories in life are the inside jokes families share. We know she’s now enjoying some hard-earned laughs with her beloved family members who passed before her: husband Jim, her sons, Gary and Mark, her parents and her brother Sylvester.
She leaves behind her brother, Leon (Nancy) Wegner, of New Hampton, IA, sister, Maxine Weber of Waterloo, IA, her children, Mike Galligan of New Hampton, IA, Barb (Bob) Havens of Eldora, IA, Paula (Paul) Laures of Lenexa, KS, Dave (Lori) Galligan of Decorah, IA, and Diane (Dave) Fitz of Leawood, KS. She also leaves behind daughter-in-law, Kelley Galligan of Lakeside, CA, sister-in-law Mary Wegner of New Hampton, sister-in-law Janet Galligan of New Hampton, nine grandkids, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Per Doris’s wishes, a private memorial is being planned for a future date.
