Joyce Ann Hyde

Joyce Ann Hyde, age 79, of Guttenberg, Iowa passed away on August 15th, 2024 in her home, after a 3-year struggle with lung cancer.

Joyce was born on the family farm in Volga Township, Clayton Co, to Wilfred and Jeanette (Kann) Berns.  After her father died in a tractor accident in 1947, her family moved to Guttenberg in 1950. She did many things in those formative years, including: janitor at St. Mary’s, Lowell’s Greenhouse, Round the Clock Laundromat, Kenny’s Boat Line, babysitting, Les & Em’s Drive Inn, nanny for the Don Ferring Family & anything else her mom volunteered her for!

After graduating from St. Mary’s Catholic school in 1963, she went on to further her education at Gale Institute in Minneapolis, MN; a private trade school specializing in training for airlines in communications. Her first job was working for the government, a top security clearance position with the U.S. Defense Department at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. At the same time, her future husband was drafted and stationed at a base near D.C. He brought along a 1959 Corvette, which was their transportation and enjoyment until they both passed. Joyce married the love of her life Robert “Bob” F. Hyde on September 24, 1963 in Washington D.C. When the Army reassigned Bob to a base in Colorado Springs, CO, Joyce was able to continue government employment at the Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station (NORAD) which was nearby. When Bob was discharged, they chose to move back home. Two sons were born from their union, Richard “Rick” F. Hyde and Thomas “Tom” R. Hyde.

Ever the multitasker, it wasn’t a surprise that while she raised her boys, she also did accounting in her home for local business, tended a huge garden, canned & froze the yield. She was also a dedicated Cub Scout Den Mother and helped her husband with their farming operation. She then spent the next 20+ years as Office Manager at Products Unlimited (later Tyco) where she gained another extended “family,” while also doing the clerical work at their family business, Hyde Automotive.

She enjoyed the Mississippi River, swimming, boating, fishing, especially with their beloved B.J. Ann. Other hobbies were playing cards, road tripping in the Corvette, gambling, being out at the farm. listening to country music, dancing and drinking a few “rum & cokes.”

Joyce is survived by one sister, Jean (Berns) Green and one son, Thomas (Candi) Hyde; two grandchildren, Alex Hyde and Carlie (Justin) Miller; one great-grandchild Axel Miller. She is also survived by a sister & brother-in-law Julia (Darrell) Ardoin, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilfred and Jeanette Berns; Grandparents, Gregor and Anna (Miller) Kann and William & Lucrecia (Walleser) Berns; her husband Robert Hyde; son Richard Hyde; brother William “Bill” Berns & brother-in-law, Terry Green.
